Glossary / Airdrop
Airdrop
An airdrop is a distribution of free tokens to wallet addresses, typically to reward early users of a protocol, to decentralise token ownership or to promote a new project. Recipients may qualify by having used an app before a snapshot date, holding a particular coin or completing tasks.
Some airdrops have been worth thousands of dollars to early users, which has led to "airdrop farming", where people interact with many protocols hoping to qualify.
Airdrops are also a favourite scam tactic. Unknown tokens appearing in your wallet, or websites asking you to "connect wallet to claim", are often designed to make you sign a transaction that drains your funds. Only claim through links published on a project's official channels, and never enter your seed phrase.
