FAQ
How do I check if a crypto exchange is registered with FIU-IND?
FIU-IND does not publish a public register. The government told the Lok Sabha on 30 March 2026 that no public portal exists, to avoid giving the impression that registered entities are licensed or endorsed. The latest official list is Annexure I to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question 5805, which names 54 VDA service providers registered as reporting entities as of 9 March 2026.
Does FIU-IND registration mean an exchange is safe or licensed?
No. Registration makes a platform a reporting entity under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, with anti-money-laundering duties. India has no crypto licensing regime, and registration is not a guarantee of solvency, security or recourse if you lose money.
Do Indian exchanges deduct TDS?
Yes. 1% TDS is deducted on the sale value of a virtual digital asset (above the annual thresholds), and gains are taxed at 30% plus 4% cess. Estimate yours with our crypto tax calculator.
Is GST charged on crypto trading fees?
Yes. The exchanges listed here state that 18% GST, or "applicable taxes", is added to their trading fees. GST is charged on the fee, not on the trade value.
What happened to WazirX?
WazirX lost more than $230 million in a hack of one of its multisig wallets on 18 July 2024. Its Singapore parent Zettai went through a court-supervised scheme of arrangement, which the Singapore High Court sanctioned on 13 October 2025. WazirX restarted on 24 October 2025, made a first distribution to users and allocated Recovery Tokens for future recoveries.
Are Binance and KuCoin legal in India?
Both had earlier takedown directions and penalties from FIU-IND, and both appear in the March 2026 list of registered reporting entities through Nest Services Limited (Binance) and Peken Global Limited (KuCoin). OKX does not appear on the registered list and stopped serving Indian users in 2024.
