FAQ
Can I use this price as my cost of acquisition?
For coins you bought, your cost of acquisition is what you actually paid, as shown in your exchange statement. A historical market price is useful where there is no purchase price: to value crypto received as a gift (fair market value on the date received), an airdrop or staking reward, or to sanity-check old records. Keep the source and date you used.
Why is this price different from my Indian exchange?
This is the global price (Bitstamp USD close) converted at the ECB USD/INR rate. Indian exchanges have usually traded a few percent above that; see our INR premium tracker. For valuation on a specific Indian exchange, use that exchange's own historical data.
Which time does the daily price refer to?
The closing price of the UTC day, that is 05:30 IST on the following day.
Which exchange rate is used?
The euro-area central bank (ECB) USD/INR reference rate for that date, or the last published rate for weekends and holidays. Indian tax rules sometimes specify the SBI TT buying rate instead (for example for foreign assets in Schedule FA), which can differ slightly.
