BtcMedia

Methodology

Every number BtcMedia publishes is calculated from public sources with a published formula. This page lists them in one place, with what each can and cannot tell you. Our editorial standards are in the editorial policy.

INR premium (live tracker)

How much more (or less) bitcoin and USDT cost on Indian rupee exchanges than the global price converted at the USD/INR rate. See: INR premium tracker

How it is calculated

  • Indian price: last traded BTC/INR and USDT/INR on the public ticker APIs of WazirX, CoinDCX and ZebPay (all FIU-IND registered).
  • Global price: CoinGecko BTC/USD aggregate × the USD/INR rate implied by CoinGecko's INR quote.
  • Premium = Indian price ÷ global INR price − 1. The headline is the simple average of the three exchanges.

Sources: WazirX, CoinDCX, ZebPay public tickers; CoinGecko. Updates: Live snapshot about every 5 minutes; history sampled every 15 minutes since 22 October 2026.

Limitations

  • Last-trade prices on thin order books can jump; a single reading can mislead.
  • Three exchanges only; offshore platforms and P2P are not included.

Raw data: premium.json · premium-history.json (free to reuse with credit to BtcMedia).

India Crypto Price Index (monthly)

The monthly summary of the INR premium: mean, median, minimum and maximum, overall and per exchange. See: India Crypto Price Index

How it is calculated

  • Built from the same 15-minute samples as the live tracker.
  • For each month: statistics across all samples; per-exchange figures use only that exchange's samples.

Sources: BtcMedia 15-minute samples (see INR premium). Updates: Recalculated on every site build; a month is final once it ends.

Limitations

  • The current month is partial and labelled as such.
  • Gaps in sampling (network or API outages) are not filled in.

Raw data: /api/v1/inr-premium/monthly.json (free to reuse with credit to BtcMedia).

Indian exchange volume share

Each India-based exchange's share of reported trading volume. See: Exchange volume share

How it is calculated

  • Daily volume in BTC per exchange from CoinGecko's exchange volume chart (all pairs, not only INR).
  • Share = exchange volume ÷ total of the six exchanges, for days where all six report.
  • Months need at least 20 complete days to appear.

Sources: CoinGecko exchange volume charts. Updates: Refreshed daily.

Limitations

  • Volumes are self-reported by exchanges and not audited by BtcMedia.
  • Offshore platforms used by Indians (such as Binance) are excluded.
  • Reported volume is not the same as users or deposits.

Raw data: inr-volume.json (free to reuse with credit to BtcMedia).

India crypto sentiment score

A 0–100 fear-and-greed style score for the Indian bitcoin market, from four public numbers. See: India sentiment score

How it is calculated

  • Momentum: price ÷ 30-day average − 1 (−15% scores 0, +15% scores 100).
  • Trend: price ÷ 200-day average − 1 (−30% scores 0, +30% scores 100).
  • Volatility: 30-day volatility of daily returns ÷ 1-year volatility (0.5 scores 100, 1.5 scores 0).
  • India premium: average INR premium (0% scores 0, 10% scores 100).
  • Each input is capped at 0 and 100; the score is their simple average. Bands: 0–24 extreme fear, 25–44 fear, 45–55 neutral, 56–75 greed, 76–100 extreme greed.

Sources: Bitstamp BTC/USD daily close × ECB USD/INR; CoinGecko live price; BtcMedia INR premium. Updates: Daily inputs, with the live price updated in your browser.

Limitations

  • A composite of price data only: it measures market behaviour, not surveyed opinion.
  • Not a trading signal.

India crypto in numbers (weekly)

A weekly summary in rupees for Monday–Sunday weeks. See: Weekly numbers

How it is calculated

  • BTC and ETH change: last daily close of the week vs the previous Sunday's close; range uses daily closes.
  • Movers: the same calculation for the top 50 coins by market cap with an INR quote, excluding stablecoins and asset-backed tokens.
  • Volume share and INR premium as described above, for the same week.

Sources: Bitstamp × ECB USD/INR (BTC, ETH); CoinGecko (other coins, volumes); BtcMedia premium samples. Updates: Rebuilt on every site build; a week appears once it is complete.

Limitations

  • Daily closes are in UTC, so a week ends at 5:30 am IST on Monday.
  • Premium is shown only for days we have samples.

Coin price history in INR

Twelve months of daily INR prices for the top 50 coins. See: Coin history pages

How it is calculated

  • CoinGecko market_chart in INR with daily interval; one value per UTC day.
  • Monthly close = last daily value in the month; change is vs the previous month's close.

Sources: CoinGecko. Updates: Refreshed daily.

Limitations

  • Aggregated global prices converted to INR; prices on a specific Indian exchange differ by the INR premium.
  • Not a substitute for your exchange statement when computing tax.

Raw data: /data/hist/coins/ (free to reuse with credit to BtcMedia).

Coin pairs in INR terms

Live and 12-month daily price ratios of the top 50 coins against BTC, ETH and USDT. See: Coin pair pages

How it is calculated

  • Ratio = coin daily INR close ÷ base coin daily INR close on the same UTC day (CoinGecko files used for coin history).
  • Live ratio = the two live INR prices from our price feed (CoinGecko), refreshed every 60 seconds.
  • Correlation and beta use daily log returns in INR; volatility is annualised with √365.
  • Pages for stablecoins and asset-backed tokens, coins under $25 million 24-hour volume or with under 330 shared days are noindex and left out of the sitemap.

Sources: CoinGecko. Updates: Rebuilt on every site build; history refreshed daily.

Limitations

  • A derived cross rate, not a quote from a pair order book; real pair prices include spreads and fees.
  • Global averages, so Indian exchange prices differ by the INR premium.
  • Not a substitute for your exchange statement when computing tax on a swap.

Raw data: /data/hist/coins/ (free to reuse with credit to BtcMedia).

Bitcoin INR daily history (since December 2013)

Daily bitcoin price in rupees from 20 December 2013 (the start of the reference-rate series we use), used by the price-on-date, SIP and comparison tools. See: Price on a date tool

How it is calculated

  • Bitstamp BTC/USD daily close (UTC) × the ECB USD/INR reference rate for that day (via Frankfurter); the last available rate is carried over weekends and holidays.

Sources: Bitstamp; European Central Bank via Frankfurter. Updates: Refreshed daily.

Limitations

  • A reference price, not the price on any Indian exchange.
  • Early years had thin trading, and days before the first reference rate are left empty.

Raw data: btc-inr.json (free to reuse with credit to BtcMedia).
