Bitcoin Pizza Day
Bitcoin Pizza Day, celebrated on 22 May each year, marks the first well-known purchase of physical goods with bitcoin. On 22 May 2010, Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC to another forum user, who ordered two Papa John's pizzas delivered to him. At the time the coins were worth about $41.
The story is retold every year because of how much those coins would later be worth: at prices above $60,000 per bitcoin, the two pizzas would be valued at over $600 million. It is often used to illustrate both bitcoin's extraordinary price history and how early adopters treated it as an experiment rather than an investment.
Hanyecz has said he has no regrets, noting that his purchase helped show bitcoin could be used as money. He is also credited with being among the first to mine bitcoin using graphics cards (GPUs) rather than ordinary computer processors.
