Glossary / Memo, tag and destination tag
Memo, tag and destination tag
Some blockchains and exchanges require a memo, tag or destination tag in addition to the address when you send crypto. It is a short number or text that tells the receiving platform which customer account to credit.
Exchanges often use one shared deposit address for many users on networks such as XRP Ledger (destination tag), Stellar and Cosmos-based chains (memo), TON (comment or memo) and EOS (memo). Without the correct tag, the coins arrive at the exchange but it cannot tell they are yours, so your deposit may go missing and require a lengthy, sometimes paid, manual recovery.
Always copy both the address and the memo or tag from the deposit page, and check whether your destination requires one. If you are sending to a personal wallet that does not need a tag, leave it blank. For large transfers, send a small test amount first. Never send to an exchange from another exchange without checking that both support the same network.
