How it is calculated

History: CoinDCX public API daily USDT/INR close (UTC day) and the ECB USD/INR reference rate for the same date (via Frankfurter). Weekdays with an ECB rate only. CoinDCX data for 2019-2020 is thin with obvious bad prints, so the series starts in January 2021. Premium = USDT price ÷ USD/INR − 1.

Live: CoinDCX and ZebPay USDT/INR from our price feed (about every 5 minutes); market USD/INR = CoinGecko's Bitcoin price in rupees ÷ its price in dollars. The thermometer ranks today's premium against every day in the history; the live rate and the ECB fixing are taken at different times, so allow 0.1-0.2 points of noise.

Tax: 30% + 4% cess = 31.2% on a gain (only the cost of acquisition is deductible, so fees are not subtracted; a loss cannot be set off against other income). 1% TDS is on the sale value after the exchange fee and GST (CBDT Circular 13/2022). TDS is part of your tax, credited against the total in your ITR, with any excess refunded. 20% without a PAN. Surcharge on high incomes is not included.

FAQ

What is 1 USDT in INR today?

At the last update (25 Oct, 03:42 am IST) 1 USDT was ₹100.58 on CoinDCX and ₹100.61 on ZebPay, against a market dollar rate of ₹94.95: a premium of about +5.9%. The live figure at the top refreshes every few minutes.

Why does USDT cost more than the dollar in India?

The data say it nearly always has: since 4 Jan 2021 the premium was above zero on 98.2% of weekdays, with a median of 5.0%, and above 5% on 50% of days. The trade that would close the gap (buying dollars or USDT abroad and selling here) is costly and slow, and each sale here carries 1% TDS and gains are taxed at 31.2%. After the 1% TDS started, the median premium rose from 5.0% to 6.1%.

Is TDS deducted when I sell USDT for INR?

Yes. Selling on an Indian exchange attracts 1% TDS on the sale value after the fee and GST (CBDT Circular 13/2022). None if your sales in the year stay under ₹10,000; ₹50,000 when a P2P buyer is an individual (a specified person). 20% without a PAN. From 1 April 2026 the rule sits in section 393 of the Income-tax Act 2025 (earlier section 194S). TDS is credited against your total tax, and any excess comes back as an ITR refund.

Is profit on USDT taxable?

Yes. USDT is a virtual digital asset, so a gain is taxed at 30% + 4% cess = 31.2%, even when it comes only from the rupee weakening. Only the cost of acquisition is deductible, and a loss cannot be set off against other income or other crypto gains.

Is USDT a good way to hold dollars?

2025 shows the risk: the dollar rose +4.8%, but USDT ended −1.1% because the premium fell from 6.8% to 0.8%. Since 4 Jan 2021, USDT is +27.5% and the dollar +30.0%. Buying at a high premium means losing when the premium shrinks, and gains are still taxed at 31.2%.

When was the premium highest and lowest?

Highest: +15.8% on 12 May 2021 (USDT ₹84.98, dollar ₹73.41). Lowest: −4.3% on 9 May 2025 (USDT ₹81.71, dollar ₹85.39). Since 4 Jan 2021, USDT was below the dollar rate on only 27 days.
