1% TDS on crypto calculator (India)

By BtcMedia Research · Updated

India deducts 1% TDS on crypto sales: section 194S of the Income-tax Act, 1961 until 31 March 2026, and section 393(1), Table Sl. No. 8(vi) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from 1 April 2026. It is a credit, not an extra tax, but for frequent traders it ties up real money. Enter your numbers below.

Not tax advice. An educational estimate for a resident seller. It assumes flat prices and ignores fees, gains tax and surcharge. TDS is a credit, not an extra tax: it is set against your final tax or refunded after your return is processed. Check your annual tax statement and ask a chartered accountant for your own case.

FAQ

How is 1% TDS on crypto calculated?

TDS is 1% of the net sale value (after GST and service charges levied by the deductor) on each transfer of a virtual digital asset, once total consideration in the tax year exceeds ₹10,000 (₹50,000 if the payer is a specified individual or HUF). There is no surcharge or cess on the TDS.

Why does TDS lock up so much cash for traders?

Each sale holds back 1%. If you reinvest what is left, after n sales you keep 0.99 to the power n of your capital. In flat markets about 69 round trips halve it. The rest sits as a credit on your PAN until your return is processed.

Do I get the crypto TDS back?

Yes, as credit. You claim it in your income tax return; it is set against your total tax and any excess is refunded after processing.

What is the TDS rate on crypto without PAN?

20% instead of 1%, under section 397(2) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (section 206AA earlier).
