Late ITR penalty calculator for crypto (AY 2026-27)
By BtcMedia Research · Updated
If you missed the due date for AY 2026-27 (FY 2025-26), you can still file a belated return until 31 December 2026. But interest builds on the unpaid tax every month, plus a late fee. This calculator shows what you pay on the day you file, and how much more it costs from the 1st of next month.
Example: The example from our 30 October story: a ₹5 lakh bitcoin sale with a ₹2 lakh gain, ₹5,000 TDS deducted, and no ITR-2 filed in July. Filed on 1 Nov 2026, it costs ₹69,288, of which ₹11,888 is interest and fees alone. The calculator below starts with it.
Your numbers
- Add the gain on each sale; don't subtract losses on other coins (the law doesn't allow it).
- See your AIS or Form 26AS.
- Only sets the late fee: ₹1,000 if total income is up to ₹5 lakh, else ₹5,000.
- Usually ₹0 for salaried people, because the employer deducted TDS.
Result
Filing on 1 Nov 2026: ₹11,888 in interest and fees on top of ₹57,400 of unpaid tax, ₹69,288 in all. From 1 Dec 2026 it rises by ₹1,148, because any part of a month counts as a full month. Right now each month adds 2% of the unpaid tax (1% under 234A plus 1% under 234B), a 24% annual rate.
| Tax on crypto (31.2%) + other unpaid tax | ₹62,400 |
|---|---|
| Unpaid tax after TDS and advance tax | ₹57,400 |
| Section 234A interest (late return) | ₹2,296 |
| Section 234B interest (advance tax not paid) | ₹4,592 |
| Section 234F late fee | ₹5,000 |
| ITR-U additional tax | ₹0 |
| Total to pay on the filing day | ₹69,288 |
234A: 4 months, 234B: 8 months
When you file vs what you pay
| Filed on | Interest, fee, ITR-U | Total to pay |
|---|---|---|
| 30 Nov 2026 | ₹11,888 | ₹69,288 |
| 31 Dec 2026 (last day for a belated return) | ₹13,036 | ₹70,436 |
| 31 Mar 2028 (ITR-U, +25%) | ₹50,920 | ₹1,08,320 |
| 31 Mar 2031 (ITR-U, +70%) | ₹1,58,373 | ₹2,15,773 |
Assumptions: individual, resident, AY 2026-27, Income-tax Act 1961; crypto gains at 30% + 4% cess = 31.2%; the balance is paid on the filing day; 234C and surcharge not included; the ITR-U addition is on tax plus interest. 234F does not apply if your income was below the exemption limit and you were not required to file.
Why the 1st of the month matters
Under 234A and 234B, any part of a month counts as a full month. Filing on 1 Nov 2026 or 30 Nov 2026 costs the same interest, but 1 Dec 2026 adds a whole month. If you can't file this month, paying the tax now as self-assessment tax still stops the interest on what you pay.

FAQ
What is the last date for a belated ITR for AY 2026-27?
31 December 2026, or before the assessment is completed if that is earlier. The original due date was 31 July 2026 for ITR-1 and ITR-2, and 31 August 2026 for ITR-3/ITR-4 without an audit. After that only an updated return (ITR-U) is possible, which adds 25% to 70% of the tax and interest.
What is the late fee for filing ITR after the due date?
Under section 234F, ₹1,000 if total income is up to ₹5 lakh, otherwise ₹5,000. It is on top of the tax and interest and must be paid before you file.
How are 234A and 234B interest calculated?
234A: 1% a month on the unpaid tax from the day after the due date until you file. 234B: if you paid less than 90% of your assessed tax (tax minus TDS) as advance tax and it is ₹10,000 or more, 1% a month from 1 April 2026. For both, any part of a month counts as a full month, and the amount is rounded down to the nearest ₹100 (rule 119A).
Do I pay interest if 1% TDS was already deducted?
Yes, on the rest of the tax. A ₹5 lakh sale had ₹5,000 of TDS, but the tax on a ₹2 lakh gain is ₹62,400. Interest runs on the unpaid ₹57,400, not on the TDS part.
Does paying the tax today and filing later stop the interest?
Yes. 234A and 234B stop on whatever you pay as self-assessment tax from the day you pay it. This calculator assumes you pay the balance on the filing day. 234C interest (late instalments) is not included.
