A single, unnamed wallet has spent 11 days quietly trading Bitcoin for Ether, and it hasn’t slowed down. According to on-chain tracker Lookonchain, the address sold another 246.25 BTC ($20.64M) on 22 October and used it to buy 8,286 ETH ($20.64M). Across the 11 days, it has sold 1,917.7 BTC (about $159M) and bought 64,545 ETH (about $155M).
Most coverage stops at “whale bets on ETH”. We ran the numbers on what the wallet actually paid, what ratio it is betting on, and whether the trade has worked yet.
The whale’s average prices
Dividing the dollar values Lookonchain reported by the coin amounts gives the wallet’s rough average prices. These are our calculations from rounded figures, so treat them as approximate.
| Period | BTC sold | Avg BTC price | ETH bought | Avg ETH price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1-8 | 843.34 | ~$82,400 | 28,386 | ~$2,270 |
| Last 3 days | 1,074.36 ($89.5M) | ~$83,300 | 36,159 ($90.6M) | ~$2,506 |
| 22 Oct alone | 246.25 ($20.64M) | ~$83,800 | 8,286 ($20.64M) | ~$2,491 |
| All 11 days | 1,917.7 ($159M) | ~$82,900 | 64,545 ($155M) | ~$2,401 |
The “days 1-8” row is simply the 11-day total minus the three-day figures Lookonchain shared earlier (1,074.36 BTC sold for 36,159 ETH). Two things stand out. First, 56% of all the BTC was sold in the last three days, so this is accelerating. Second, the wallet kept buying ETH even as ETH rose from roughly $2,270 to about $2,500. It is not waiting for a dip.
The ratio it is really betting on
Strip away the dollars and this is a bet on the ETH/BTC ratio. Every leg we can measure converts at almost exactly the same rate: about 33.66 ETH per BTC, or an ETH/BTC price of roughly 0.0297. That holds for the 11-day total (64,545 ÷ 1,917.7), the three-day batch and today’s trade.
So the wallet doesn’t need Ether to rise in dollars. It needs Ether to beat Bitcoin. If ETH/BTC climbs back above 0.03, the swap starts paying off; if Bitcoin keeps leading, the wallet would have been better off doing nothing.
Has it worked? Not yet
Using today’s trade prices (about $83,817 per BTC and $2,491 per ETH):
- The 64,545 ETH bought are worth about $160.8M.
- The 1,917.7 BTC sold would be worth about $160.7M.
That is a difference of well under 0.1%. Both coins rose over the period, so the ETH position shows a paper gain of about $5.8M on its $155M cost, but the BTC it gave up rose by about the same amount. For now, the rotation is a wash.
One loose end: the wallet sold about $4M more BTC than it spent on ETH. Lookonchain’s posts don’t explain the gap. It could be rounding, trading costs, or money parked in stablecoins, and we can’t tell which from the public data.
BtcMedia verdict
This is one wallet, not a market signal. Its size (about $159M) is large for a single address but small next to the daily flows into US spot Bitcoin ETFs, which ran to roughly $528M on a single recent day. What makes it worth watching is consistency: the same 33.66 ratio, every day, with bigger lots lately. Watch ETH/BTC on our Ethereum price page and Bitcoin price page; if the ratio stalls, a wallet this persistent may simply keep buying.
What it means for Indian investors
At the rupee’s 22 October close of 94.82 per dollar (The Hindu), the full BTC sale is about ₹1,508 crore and today’s leg alone about ₹196 crore.
The bigger lesson is tax. In India, swapping one crypto for another is a transfer of a virtual digital asset, not a neutral reshuffle. Any gain on the BTC sold is taxed at 30% plus cess, 1% TDS applies to the transfer (on the BTC leg here, that would be roughly ₹15 crore withheld), and losses on one coin can’t be set off against gains on another. A rotation that is break-even in dollars, like this one so far, can still leave an Indian trader worse off after tax. Run the numbers before copying a whale.
FAQ
Who is the whale? The wallet is unidentified. Lookonchain tracks it by address and hasn’t linked it to a named fund or person.
Does a whale buying ETH mean the price will rise? Not by itself. One wallet’s $155M is small relative to total daily trading in Ether, and whales can be wrong or reverse course.
Is a BTC-to-ETH swap taxable in India? Yes. It counts as a transfer of a virtual digital asset, so gains are taxed at 30% plus cess and 1% TDS applies, with no set-off of losses.
