Result
- Profit / loss before tax
- Fees + GST (buy and sell)
- TDS withheld on sale (1%)
- ① Cash received on sale day
- Tax 30% + 4% cess on gain
- ② Still payable at filing
- ③ Net in hand (profit kept)

How it works
- Gain = sale value − amount invested. Fees are not deductible.
- Fees = fee % on the buy and on the sale, plus 18% GST on the fee if ticked.
- Cash on sale day = sale value − sell fee − 1% TDS.
- Tax = 31.2% of a positive gain (30% + 4% cess). A loss has no tax and cannot be set off or carried forward.
- At filing you pay tax − TDS. If TDS is larger, the difference is a credit or refund.
- Net in hand = gain − fees − tax. It is the profit you keep once your return is settled.
Assumes a resident individual with no surcharge (income up to ₹50 lakh), one buy and one sale, and fees charged in rupees.
FAQ
How much of my crypto profit do I keep in India?
On a profitable sale you keep about 68.8% of the gain before fees: 30% tax plus 4% cess takes 31.2%. Exchange fees and the 18% GST on those fees come out of your pocket on top, and they are not deductible from the gain.
Why is the money I receive on the day of sale less than the sale value?
The exchange withholds 1% TDS on the sale value (once your yearly total crosses ₹10,000) and charges its trading fee plus GST. The TDS is not lost: it is a credit on your PAN that reduces the tax you pay when you file.
What happens if I sell at a loss?
There is no tax on a loss, but 1% TDS is still deducted. You get it back as a refund or credit when you file your return. The loss cannot be set off against other income or other crypto gains, and cannot be carried forward.
Are trading fees deductible from crypto gains?
No. Only the cost of acquisition can be deducted from the sale value. Fees, GST, gas and other expenses are not deductible, so this calculator subtracts them from your cash but not from the taxable gain.
