The headline from CME Group’s latest crypto report is a record: $469.5 billion of notional crypto futures and options volume in the third quarter of 2026. The more useful detail sits one layer down. Bitcoin still dominates the room, but the exchange is now openly selling a contract that bets on ether beating bitcoin, and it is publishing research to explain why the two coins are drifting apart.
Where the $469.5 billion went
CME’s Q3 crypto highlights break the total down by product. We added the shares:
| Q3 2026 suite | Avg daily contracts | Notional volume | Share of total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 115.9K | $326.7B | 69.6% |
| Ether | 70.3K | $118.8B | 25.3% |
| Solana | 6.5K | $12.8B | 2.7% |
| XRP | 12.2K | $10.1B | 2.2% |
| Five smaller coins (futures only) | about 2K | about $1.0B | 0.2% |
| Total | 196K | $469.5B | 100% |
CME’s Q3 earnings release counts 64 trading days in the quarter. Dividing $469.5 billion by 64 gives about $7.3 billion a day, which matches the $7.3 billion daily notional in CME’s October 2 volume release.
Keep the scale in proportion, though. That same release puts CME’s overall Q3 average at 29.4 million contracts a day. Crypto’s 196,000 is about 0.67% of all contracts traded. It’s a record for crypto, and still a small corner of the world’s biggest derivatives exchange.
The contract that says ether and bitcoin are different trades
In a research note on Ether/Bitcoin Ratio futures, CME describes bitcoin mainly as a decentralised store of value and ether as an infrastructure layer with staking yield. The product, code EBR, lets a trader buy or sell the ETH/BTC price ratio in one contract instead of two separate legs.
CME’s own numbers on the ratio:
- Ether returned roughly 70% and bitcoin about 43% in Q3, each its strongest quarter in years.
- The ratio rose about 19% over the period, after hitting its low for the year in June.
- From January to September it moved an average of 0.00032 between settlements, about $320 per contract.
That 19% checks out: 1.70 divided by 1.43 is about 1.19.
Our math: what one ratio contract costs today
An EBR contract is worth $1,000,000 times the ETH/BTC ratio. At CoinGecko prices this morning, ether at $2,359 and bitcoin at $80,468, the ratio is about 0.0293.
| Item | USD | INR (at ~94.95) |
|---|---|---|
| One EBR contract (notional) | about $29,300 | about ₹27.8 lakh |
| Initial margin (~15%, per CME) | about $4,400 | about ₹4.2 lakh |
| Average move between settlements | about $320 | about ₹30,400 |
CME calls EBR its most capital-efficient crypto contract, with margin offsets of up to 90% when it is paired with matching bitcoin and ether futures. The average daily swing is about 1.1% of the contract’s value, but measured against the margin it’s about 7%. Leverage cuts both ways.
What it means for Indian investors
Indian residents can’t simply open a CME account and trade this. RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme doesn’t allow money to be sent abroad for margin or margin calls on overseas exchanges. What Indian readers can use is the signal: a regulated US exchange now treats bitcoin and ether as two different bets, not one “crypto” bucket.
For anyone holding both coins in India, that argues for checking them separately: bitcoin at about ₹76.4 lakh and ether at about ₹2.24 lakh this morning. Track them on our Bitcoin price page, Ether price page and Bitcoin in INR page. Spot gains are taxed at 30% plus cess with 1% TDS. Our free tools can show your net-in-hand figure after tax.
BtcMedia verdict
The record is real, but it is a bitcoin record first: seven of every ten dollars went to bitcoin products. The interesting shift is that CME is marketing the gap between ether and bitcoin as a tradable idea of its own. One strong quarter for ether doesn’t make a trend. The ratio’s June low came only four months ago.
