Devcon 8, the Ethereum Foundation’s flagship conference, comes to Mumbai from 3 to 6 November 2026 at Jio World Centre, G Block, Bandra Kurla Complex, according to the official Devcon site. It is the first time India has hosted it, and for Indian attendees the ticket page hides a tax question most coverage skips: the cheapest way in is to pay with ether, and India taxes spending crypto as a sale.

So does the ETH discount survive India’s tax? We ran the numbers.

The ticket prices, in rupees

The Devcon ticket store lists every price in US dollars, including 18% GST. We converted at USD/INR 95.30 (open.er-api.com rate updated 29 October, 5:32 AM IST).

TicketPrice (incl. GST)In rupeesPay with
General Admission$499₹47,553ETH
General Admission$999₹95,201Fiat (card)
India Resident (Aadhaar proof via Self.xyz)$149₹14,199ETH or fiat
Past POAP holders$449₹42,788ETH only
Ethereum Public Goods / Sanctuary Tech Builder$349₹33,258Varies
Indian Students (application)$25₹2,382Application

General Admission is the only ticket where the payment method changes the price, and it halves it.

Why paying in ETH is a taxable event

Under Indian tax law, using a virtual digital asset (VDA) to pay for goods or services is a transfer of that asset. The Income Tax Department’s VDA explainer says income from a VDA transfer is taxed at a flat 30% plus surcharge and cess, with no deduction except the cost of acquisition. Section 115BBH also bars setting off a crypto loss against any other income. From 1 April 2026 the same rule sits in the Income-tax Act, 2025.

In plain terms, if your ETH is worth more today than you paid for it, the difference counts as income the moment it leaves your wallet for Devcon.

The BtcMedia math: ETH route vs card

The $499 ticket needs about 0.2163 ETH at $2,306.94 (CoinGecko, 29 October, about 8:45 AM IST), or roughly ₹47,553 of ether. Three cases, using 30% plus 4% cess (31.2%) and ignoring surcharge:

Your ETH cost for that 0.2163 ETHTaxable gainTax at 31.2%Total cost of ETH routeCard priceYou save
₹47,553 (bought just before paying)₹0₹0₹47,553₹95,201₹47,648
₹30,000₹17,553₹5,476₹53,029₹95,201₹42,172
₹0 (worst case, entire value is gain)₹47,553₹14,836₹62,389₹95,201₹32,812

Even in the worst case, the ETH route is about ₹32,800 cheaper than paying by card. You can run your own cost basis through our crypto tax calculator for India.

The India Resident ticket is the opposite case. It costs $149 whether you pay in ETH or fiat, so spending ether you bought cheaply only adds tax. If 0.0646 ETH that cost you ₹10,000 pays a ₹14,199 ticket, you owe about ₹1,310 for no discount at all.

What it means for Indian investors

  • Indian residents: the $149 ticket is the best deal on the page, and paying in fiat avoids creating a taxable crypto transfer.
  • If you buy GA: the ETH price wins, but keep a record of the date, the ETH amount and its rupee value, because it belongs in your return’s VDA schedule. Our crypto ITR checklist covers what to note.
  • ETH that is underwater: spending it does not create a usable loss, because crypto losses cannot be set off in India.
  • Live price: check Ethereum’s price on the day you pay, since the ETH amount moves with it.

One open point: the 1% TDS rule puts the duty to deduct on whoever pays for the crypto, and the ticket page does not say how a foreign organiser handles that for in-kind payments. The 31.2% on your gain is clearly yours to report either way.

BtcMedia verdict: For Indian residents, take the $149 India Resident ticket and pay in fiat. For anyone who needs General Admission, the $499 ETH price beats the $999 card price by ₹32,800 or more, even after India’s crypto tax.

How we calculated this: ticket prices from tickets.devcon.org (29 October 2026), USD/INR 95.30 from open.er-api.com, ETH at $2,306.94 from CoinGecko at about 8:45 AM IST, tax at 30% plus 4% cess with surcharge ignored.
