“Can I mine bitcoin at home in India?” is a question people keep searching, usually after seeing a miner on a shopping site. Legally, nothing in Indian law specifically bans or licenses bitcoin mining. The real answer comes from two numbers: your electricity tariff and a tax rule most mining calculators ignore.
We ran today’s network data through one of the most efficient air-cooled machines on sale.
The machine and today’s network
Bitmain’s S21 Pro specification lists 234 TH/s at 3,510 W on the wall, or 15 joules per terahash. Bitmain’s store lists it at $1,872, about ₹1,77,700 at today’s rate of ₹94.92 per dollar, before shipping and Indian import duty.
According to mempool.space, the network ran at about 1,065 EH/s on the morning of 31 October 2026, and the last 144 blocks paid miners 453.49 BTC in total (the 3.125 BTC subsidy plus fees, which were only 0.77% of that). A 234 TH/s machine’s share works out to 0.0000996 BTC a day, about ₹730 at a bitcoin price of ₹73.34 lakh. That is before pool fees, so real earnings are slightly lower.
The machine uses 3.51 kW × 24 hours = 84.24 units (kWh) a day.
The tax rule that changes the answer
Under section 115BBH, crypto income is taxed at 30% plus 4% cess, and the only deduction allowed is the cost of acquisition. The finance ministry told the Lok Sabha in 2022 that mining infrastructure costs are not cost of acquisition. So a mined coin has a cost of nil, and when you sell it, 31.2% of the whole sale value is tax. Your electricity bill and the machine itself reduce nothing. Exchanges also deduct the 1% TDS on the sale, which you adjust against this bill.
Our math: one month of mining at different tariffs
Assumes 30 days, today’s difficulty and price, coins sold at the same ₹ value, before pool fees and hardware cost.
| Power tariff (₹/unit) | Electricity cost | Profit before tax | Profit after 31.2% tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5 | ₹12,636 | ₹9,277 | ₹2,440 |
| ₹6 | ₹15,163 | ₹6,750 | −₹87 |
| ₹7 | ₹17,690 | ₹4,222 | −₹2,614 |
| ₹8 | ₹20,218 | ₹1,695 | −₹5,142 |
| ₹9 | ₹22,745 | −₹832 | −₹7,669 |
Monthly mining output is 0.00299 BTC, worth ₹21,913, and the tax on selling it is ₹6,837.
The pre-tax break-even is ₹8.67 a unit. After tax it falls to ₹5.97 a unit. Even at ₹5, the ₹2,440 a month would take about six years to pay back a ₹1.78 lakh machine, and network difficulty usually rises over that kind of period, which shrinks each machine’s share.
BtcMedia verdict
For a household paying a typical slab tariff, home mining with a current machine is a loss once India’s tax is counted. It only works on very cheap power, and then mostly as a way to buy bitcoin slowly with electricity. The same ₹1.78 lakh in a Bitcoin SIP buys coins with a real cost basis, so you pay tax only on the gain rather than the whole sale value.
Two practical limits also apply: the S21 Pro needs a 220-277 V, 20 A supply and is rated at 76 dB, louder than most homes can tolerate.
What it means for Indian investors
- Check your actual per-unit tariff, including fixed charges, before buying any miner; the break-even moves with every rupee.
- Keep records of when mined coins arrived and when you sold them, since the full sale value goes into Schedule VDA.
- See how miner pay is changing in ₹ on our Bitcoin transaction fee tool, and estimate the tax on a sale with the crypto tax calculator.
FAQ
Is bitcoin mining legal in India? No Indian law specifically bans or licenses it. The tax department treats mined coins as virtual digital assets, taxed when you sell them.
Can I deduct electricity from my mining tax in India? No. The government has said mining infrastructure costs are not cost of acquisition, so mined coins have a nil cost and the full sale value is taxed at 31.2%.
At what electricity rate does bitcoin mining break even in India? With an S21 Pro at 31 October 2026 conditions, about ₹8.67 a unit before tax and ₹5.97 after tax, not counting the machine’s price.
How we calculated this: miner share = 234 TH/s ÷ 1,065.4 EH/s × 453.49 BTC per 144 blocks (mempool.space, 8:45 AM IST, 31 Oct 2026); BTC at ₹73,33,556 and $77,264 (CoinGecko); tax 30% + 4% cess on full sale value.
This is not financial or tax advice. Mining returns change with difficulty, price and fees; check with a tax professional.
