XRP Holders Are Down 37% in Rupees Over a Year. Indian Tax Law Lets That Loss Cut Nothing

1 XRP was worth about ₹123.56 at 9:00 AM IST on 5 November 2026, according to CoinGecko ($1.31, up about 4% in 24 hours). That makes 1,000 XRP roughly ₹1,23,560. For the live number, see our XRP price page and the XRP to INR page.

Most “XRP to INR” searches stop at the conversion. For many Indian holders the more useful number is the one a year back, because anyone who bought in November 2025 is sitting on a loss. And Indian tax law treats that loss very differently from a loss on shares.

XRP in rupees: quick conversions

At ₹123.56 per XRP (CoinGecko, about 9:00 AM IST, 5 Nov 2026):

XRPValue in ₹
100 XRP₹12,356
500 XRP₹61,780
1,000 XRP₹1,23,560
5,000 XRP₹6,17,800

Prices move by the minute, so use these as a snapshot. To check what XRP was worth on the day you bought, use our crypto price on date tool.

A year of XRP in rupees

CoinGecko’s daily data shows how rough the last 12 months were:

PointXRP price in ₹1,000 XRP
5 Nov 2025₹195.62₹1,95,620
11 Nov 2025 (12-month high)₹223.44₹2,23,440
17 Aug 2026 (12-month low)₹94.75₹94,750
5 Nov 2026₹123.56₹1,23,560

In dollars XRP fell 40.7% over the year ($2.21 to $1.31). In rupees the fall was a smaller 36.8%, because the rupee weakened against the dollar over the same period. That cushion was real, but it still left a 1,000 XRP holder from last November about ₹72,060 down.

Why that ₹72,060 loss does nothing for your tax

Under section 115BBH of the 1961 Act, which became section 194 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from 1 April 2026, two rules decide this:

  1. A loss from transferring a virtual digital asset cannot be set off against any other income, including gains on other crypto.
  2. That loss cannot be carried forward to later years.

Here is what it means in practice. Say you sold some bitcoin this year for a ₹1,00,000 gain, and you also sell 1,000 XRP bought a year ago, booking the ₹72,060 loss.

Crypto (VDA rules)If both were shares
Gain on the winner₹1,00,000₹1,00,000
Loss on the loser₹72,060₹72,060
Taxable gain₹1,00,000₹27,940
Tax on the crypto gain at 31.2%₹31,200not applicable

Under the normal capital-gains rules, a share loss can reduce a share gain and the leftover can be carried forward. Crypto gets neither. You pay ₹31,200 on the bitcoin gain whether or not you sell your XRP. We walked through the same rule with Ethereum and bitcoin in this earlier example, and you can test your own numbers with our crypto loss set-off calculator.

Selling at a loss still costs you cash

”Tax-loss selling” before 31 March is a common habit with shares. With XRP in India it gains you nothing on tax, and it has a cost. A sale of 1,000 XRP at today’s price still has 1% TDS of about ₹1,236 deducted from the ₹1,23,560 sale value, even though you made a loss. You get it back only as a credit or refund when you file your ITR. Our crypto TDS calculator shows the deduction for any amount. Exchange fees and 18% GST on those fees come on top.

The flip side matters too. Someone who bought 1,000 XRP near the August low of ₹94.75 has a gain of about ₹28,810 today. If they sell, the tax is 31.2% of that, about ₹8,989, with no way to reduce it using losses on any other coin. Run your own figures in the crypto tax calculator.

What it means for Indian investors

  • Decide whether to hold or sell XRP on its own merits, not to “save tax”. A crypto loss in India cuts no tax.
  • If you do sell, keep the exchange’s TDS statement, because the 1% must match your Form 26AS when you claim it.
  • You still report the loss sale in Schedule VDA of your ITR, even though it reduces nothing.

BtcMedia verdict: XRP’s rebound from its August low has helped, but a buyer from a year ago is still down about 37% in rupees. In India that loss is a cost you carry alone. It is not a tax tool.

FAQ

What is 1 XRP in INR today? About ₹123.56 at 9:00 AM IST on 5 November 2026, per CoinGecko. Check the live XRP to INR page for the current rate.

Can I set off my XRP loss against my bitcoin profit? No. The VDA rule bars setting off a crypto loss against any income, including gains on other crypto.

Is TDS deducted if I sell XRP at a loss? Yes. The 1% TDS applies to the sale value, not the profit, so it is deducted even on a loss sale. You claim it back in your ITR.

How we calculated this: XRP prices in ₹ and $ from CoinGecko’s current price and daily history at about 9:00 AM IST on 5 November 2026; tax at 30% plus 4% cess under the rule quoted from the Income Tax Department’s section 115BBH page. This is not financial or tax advice; check your own case with a tax professional.
