Why it matters
New bitcoin enter circulation only as block rewards, so each halving halves the rate of new supply. After block 1,050,000, about 225 new BTC a day will be issued (144 blocks × 1.5625) instead of about 450. Miners' revenue in bitcoin terms drops overnight, which is why the event is watched by the mining industry as much as by traders.

What is the Bitcoin halving?
Every 210,000 blocks (about four years), the number of new bitcoin paid to miners for each block is cut in half. It started at 50 BTC in 2009 and has been 3.125 BTC since April 2024. It is written into Bitcoin's code and is the reason total supply approaches, but never exceeds, 21 million.
Does the price always rise after a halving?
In the past, Bitcoin traded higher a year after each halving (see the table), but three or four events are far too few to draw a rule, and markets now anticipate halvings. Past performance does not predict future returns.
