Bitcoin halving cycle returns in rupees
By BtcMedia Research · Updated · Data to 23 Oct 2026
Every halving brings the same promise of a rally. This page sticks to history: the real rupee price of Bitcoin on the 2016, 2020 and 2024 halving days, and 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48 months later. Buying on halving day and holding a year made money in all three rupee cycles, but less each time: +271%, +541%, +34%. Pick your own entry and holding period below.

How it is calculated
Prices: daily close (UTC), Bitstamp BTC/USD converted with the ECB USD/INR reference rate. The rupee series starts on 20 Dec 2013, so the first halving (28 Nov 2012) is shown in US dollars only and is not counted in the rupee results.
"X months later" = the same calendar date X months on (or the last day of a shorter month). High = the highest daily close within 2 years after the halving; fall = the lowest close after that high, up to the next halving (or today).
Tax: 30% + 4% cess = 31.2% on a gain (no tax on a loss, and a loss cannot be set off against other income). Surcharge on high incomes, 1% TDS, fees and the Indian exchange premium are left out.
FAQ
How much did Bitcoin's rupee price change 12 and 18 months after a halving?
From the halving-day rupee price, 12 months later: 2016: +271%, 2020: +541%, 2024: +34%. 18 months later: 2016: +2,005%, 2020: +642%, 2024: +79%. The 2012 halving has no rupee data (in US dollars it was +8,190% after 12 months).
How long after a halving did Bitcoin peak?
The highest close within 2 years came 371 to 546 days after the halving (2012: 371 days, 92.6×; 2016: 525 days, 28.2×; 2020: 546 days, 7.70×; 2024: 534 days, 2.04×; 2012 in US dollars). The size of the peak has shrunk every cycle.
Where is the current cycle compared with past cycles?
On the 23 Oct 2026 close (day 916 after the halving) Bitcoin was ₹76,97,399, 1.42× its halving-day price and 30% below this cycle's high (₹1,10,73,352 on 6 Oct 2025). On the same day, the 2012 cycle was at 18.4× and 80% below its high; the 2016 cycle was at 5.88× and 79% below its high; the 2020 cycle was at 2.03× and 74% below its high.
Is it too late to buy 18 months after a halving?
Historically, yes: buying 18 months after the halving and holding a year lost money in every cycle (2012: −59%, 2016: −69%, 2020: −72%, 2024: −19%; 2012 in US dollars). That is 4 cycles of history, not a guarantee.
Why is the 2012 halving not in rupees?
In this dataset BTC/INR starts on 20 Dec 2013. The first halving was on 28 Nov 2012, so it is shown with Bitstamp's US dollar price and left out of the rupee results.
Does the price always rise after a halving?
No. The halving is fixed in code; the price is not. The peak multiple within 2 years shrank every cycle: 92.6× → 28.2× → 7.70× → 2.04×. Markets know the halving date in advance, and three or four cycles are too few to make a rule.
