Wallets that Arkham labels as Trump Media convertible-note collateral sent 4,259 bitcoin to Crypto.com on 5 November 2026, CoinDesk reported. The coins moved in two batches — 2,140.03 BTC and 2,119.31 BTC — at about 02:17 UTC. CoinDesk valued the flow at roughly $342 million; Lookonchain put it near $343.67 million.
At the 6 November USD/INR close of ₹93.91, $342 million is about ₹3,212 crore. Spot bitcoin was near $76,000 as the story spread.
A move to an exchange is not proof of a sale. That line matters in India as much as in the United States.
What moved
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| BTC moved | 4,259 (2,140.03 + 2,119.31) |
| Reported USD value | ~$342m (CoinDesk) |
| ≈ ₹ at ₹93.91/$ | ~₹3,212 crore |
| Q2 collateral disclosed | 4,260.73 BTC (30 Jun) |
| Treasury incl. pledged (31 Jul) | ~14,139 BTC (~30% moved) |
Trump Media’s second-quarter filing listed 4,260.73 BTC as collateral for its 2028 convertible notes. A 2 November filing said noteholders can demand cash repayment on 30 November 2026, potentially near $1 billion (~₹9,391 crore at ₹93.91) if every holder puts the notes — and that the company might have to sell bitcoin if refinancing falls short.
CoinDesk had no company reply on the latest transfer. In May and August 2026, similar Crypto.com moves were described as trading or custody, not sales.
What it means for Indian investors
A custody move is not automatically a VDA sale. Section 115BBH taxes income from the transfer of a virtual digital asset. Sending coins you still own into a custodian or exchange deposit is not the same as selling them. India’s tax clock starts on a disposal for consideration. We covered pledge versus sale in Borrowing Against Bitcoin in India Isn’t Taxed.
An actual sale locks 31.2% on the gain. For an Indian resident or company, a realised VDA gain is taxed at 30% plus cess (31.2%), with no indexation and no set-off against other income. On a FIU Indian exchange, 1% TDS applies to sale proceeds. Check the crypto tax calculator and TDS calculator before treating any large transfer as cash.
Paper marks still hurt. If bitcoin drops another 5% after a treasury scare, ₹10 lakh of BTC marks about −₹50,000. Realising that loss in India still gives ₹0 relief against salary or equity — see the loss set-off calculator.
Sale vs move (India)
| Scenario | India tax outcome |
|---|---|
| Same-owner move to a custodian | Generally not a 115BBH transfer until sold |
| BTC pledged as loan collateral | Pledge alone is not the taxable event |
| BTC sold for INR on a FIU exchange | 31.2% on the gain + 1% TDS |
| BTC swapped for ETH or USDT | Treated as a transfer (swap tax) |
BtcMedia verdict
Treat the 4,259 BTC flow as a custody and debt-calendar story until a sale shows in a filing. For Indian readers: moving bitcoin is not selling bitcoin. Price pressure can still hit bitcoin in INR and the INR premium tracker; tax arrives only on disposal. The 30 November put date is when the company’s own filing says a sale becomes more likely.
How we calculated this: ₹ crore = reported USD × ₹93.91 (Moneycontrol close, 6 Nov 2026). Batches and $342m from CoinDesk citing Arkham; collateral and Nov-30 put language from Trump Media SEC filings as reported by CoinDesk and crypto.news.
FAQ
Did Trump Media confirm a sale?
No. CoinDesk reported no reply. Earlier May and August Crypto.com moves were described by the company as non-sales.
If I send bitcoin to CoinDCX, do I owe tax?
Depositing into an exchange account you own is not, by itself, a taxable VDA transfer. Tax is due when you sell, swap, or otherwise dispose of the asset. TDS can still apply on the later sale.
Would an Indian company pay the same 31.2%?
Section 115BBH applies to assessees whose income includes VDA transfer income, including companies. Confirm with a tax professional for your entity.
Not financial advice. Tax outcomes depend on your facts and the Income-tax Act as applied to your return.
