The first stablecoin ever to run on Bitcoin is heading back. Utexo opened Utexo Mint on October 22, letting exchanges, wallets and market makers test USDT on Bitcoin’s Signet test network, with a public launch through partner wallets and exchanges set for November 28. A second phase on the Lightning Network is planned for Q1 2027.
Most coverage stops at “USDT returns to Bitcoin.” The more useful detail is in the wording: Utexo calls it a bridged version of USDT. That is a different thing from what left in 2023, and it decides who you are trusting.
How USDT left Bitcoin the first time
Tether launched on Bitcoin in 2014 through the Omni Layer. On August 6, 2023 Tether announced it would stop minting USDT-Omni from August 17, 2023, citing a lack of traction as exchanges moved to other chains. At the time, CoinDesk reported, citing Tether’s transparency report, about $240 million of USDT sat on Omni out of an $82 billion total.
Our math: $240 million out of $82 billion is 0.29%. Bitcoin, the network USDT was born on, carried less than three of every thousand dollars of it when Tether walked away. Tether also said then it would return to Bitcoin once USDT on RGB went live.
What actually arrives on November 28
RGB is now the protocol Utexo uses. But according to Utexo’s own documentation, the token is minted against collateral held elsewhere:
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Source | You start with USDT on Ethereum, Tron, Polygon PoS or Plasma, or USDT0 on Arbitrum |
| 2. Hub | Non-Arbitrum USDT is converted to USDT0 on Arbitrum via USDT0 / LayerZero |
| 3. Lock | USDT0 is locked in Utexo’s Arbitrum bridge contract |
| 4. Mint | Signers in secure enclaves verify the deposit and mint USDT on Bitcoin’s RGB layer |
| 5. Exit | A burn on Bitcoin waits for 6 confirmations, then an M-of-N signer quorum releases USDT0 |
So the Bitcoin-side token is only as good as three things: Tether’s original USDT, the USDT0 / LayerZero route, and Utexo’s bridge contract plus its signer quorum. Six confirmations at Bitcoin’s 10-minute target block time means roughly an hour before a withdrawal can be released.
The upside Utexo is selling is privacy. Transfers are “private by design”, with transaction details hidden from the public chain but selective disclosure available for compliance, per its launch post. Utexo also says it has joined Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program, a forum of more than 100 firms; that is a membership, not a card product.
What it means for Indian investors
Today, nothing. No FIU-IND-registered Indian exchange has announced support, and the USDT you buy in rupees stays on whatever networks your exchange already uses. If you check the live rate on our USDT to INR converter or the Tether price page, none of that moves because of this launch.
Two things to keep in mind if it does arrive:
- Every hop can be a taxable event. Moving USDT from Tron into a bridged Bitcoin version involves swapping one token for another. Under India’s rules, exchanging one virtual digital asset for another is a transfer, so 30% tax on any gain plus 4% cess and the 1% TDS rules apply. Stablecoin gains are tiny, but the paperwork is not. Our crypto tax tools can help you keep the record.
- Privacy is not invisibility. A token built for selective disclosure still leaves a trail for regulators, and Indian tax law asks you to report the asset either way.
BtcMedia verdict
This is a real step for Bitcoin as a settlement network: dollars that can be swapped against BTC on-chain without a centralised exchange. But it is not Tether reissuing on Bitcoin in the way it promised in 2023. It is a bridge, and bridges add a layer of trust. Watch November 28 for which wallets and exchanges go live, and how much USDT0 actually gets locked. That number will say more than any launch post.
How we calculated this: the 0.29% share uses CoinDesk’s August 17, 2023 figures ($240 million on Omni, $82 billion total); the one-hour exit uses Bitcoin’s 10-minute block target and Utexo’s 6-confirmation rule, checked at 4:50 AM IST on October 25, 2026.
FAQ
Is this the same USDT Tether issues? It is a bridged version. Utexo mints it on Bitcoin’s RGB layer against USDT0 locked in its bridge contract on Arbitrum, per its documentation.
When can I use it? Utexo plans a public launch on November 28 through partner wallets and exchanges, with Lightning support targeted for Q1 2027.
Can I buy it on an Indian exchange? No Indian exchange has announced support so far. Check your exchange’s announcements before moving any funds.
