Devcon, the Ethereum Foundation’s flagship developer conference, opens in Mumbai on 3 November, the first time it has come to India. Most coverage is about the speakers and side events. For an Indian reader deciding whether to go, the more useful question is simpler: what does a ticket actually cost in rupees, and what is the catch in paying with ETH?

Every Devcon 8 ticket, in rupees

The official ticket shop lists prices in dollars, each “incl. 18% GST”. We converted them at about ₹94.9 per dollar, the rate implied by CoinGecko’s ETH prices in USD and INR at 6:45 PM IST on 31 October.

TicketPrice (USD)About in ₹Who qualifies
General Admission, card$999₹94,805Anyone
General Admission, ETH$499₹47,355Anyone, paid in ETH
Past POAP holders$449₹42,610Attended a past Devcon/Devconnect (ETH only)
Public goods / Sanctuary Tech builders$349₹33,120Fundraisers or approved builders
India Resident$149₹14,140Indians proving residency with Aadhaar via a zero-knowledge check
Indian Students$25₹2,373Approved student applicants, ID at check-in
Youth (3-17)$19₹1,803Children, with consent form

The Ethereum Foundation’s launch post also mentions a $99 India Early Bird voucher given out at ETH Mumbai, and says later general waves rise to $599 in ETH or $1,199 by card. Resident and student tickets are limited and non-transferable, so availability this close to the event is not guaranteed.

The India Resident ticket is the interesting part. Instead of uploading Aadhaar, buyers prove residency through Self.xyz using a zero-knowledge proof, which the organisers say means no ID data leaves the phone. An Aadhaar card and ID are still checked at the door.

The ETH discount, and the tax that comes with it

A general ticket costs half as much in ETH as by card: $499 against $999, a gap of about ₹47,450. At $2,245 per ETH, the ETH ticket needs about 0.222 ETH.

In India, though, paying with ETH is not like paying with a card. Handing over crypto in exchange for a ticket is a transfer of a virtual digital asset, the same way a crypto-to-crypto swap is a sale. Any gain over what you paid for that ETH is taxed at 30% plus 4% cess, a flat 31.2%, with no deduction other than cost.

Here is a worked example. The purchase price is illustrative, not a market figure.

Amount
ETH spent on a $499 ticket0.222 ETH, worth ₹47,355
If you bought that ETH at ₹1,50,000 per ETH, cost₹33,300
Gain treated as taxable₹14,055
Tax at 31.2%₹4,385
Effective ticket costabout ₹51,740

Even after tax, that is still about ₹43,000 cheaper than paying ₹94,805 by card. The trap runs the other way: if your ETH is worth less than you paid for it, the loss on spending it cannot be set off against any other income, crypto or otherwise. What it means for Indian investors

  • Residents should almost never pay the general price. ₹14,140 against ₹47,355 or more is the biggest saving on the list, as long as resident tickets remain.
  • Students get the cheapest entry to a global crypto event held in India so far, at about ₹2,373 if approved.
  • Paying in ETH is a tax event. Keep the transaction hash, the ETH price at the time and your purchase cost; it goes in the VDA schedule of your return.
  • This is not a reason to buy ETH. The event says nothing about where the ETH price goes next.

BtcMedia verdict

Devcon in Mumbai is priced to pull in Indian builders, and the resident and student tiers do that well. The ETH discount is real, but for Indian holders it is a crypto sale in disguise. Pay in ETH only with coins bought below today’s price, and only if you are ready to report it.

How we calculated this: ticket prices from tickets.devcon.org and the Ethereum Foundation blog; USD/INR of about 94.9 derived from CoinGecko ETH prices (₹2,13,120 and $2,245.44) at 6:45 PM IST, 31 October 2026; tax at 30% plus 4% cess on VDA gains.
