For years the advice in Indian crypto groups was simple: send USDT on Tron (TRC-20), never on Ethereum (ERC-20), because Ethereum gas was expensive. On 31 October 2026, the numbers say the opposite for a plain wallet-to-wallet transfer.
The fee in rupees, worked out
Ethereum’s gas price read 0.046 gwei from a public Ethereum node at about 2:45 PM IST, and CoinGecko priced ETH at ₹2,12,721 and TRX at ₹30.33 at the same time. A USDT transfer uses about 41,309 gas when the recipient already holds USDT and about 63,209 gas when they don’t, as these two transactions show. The extra ~20,000 gas pays for writing a new balance entry, as an Ethereum StackExchange answer traces step by step.
Tron works differently. A USDT transfer needs energy, and a wallet that hasn’t staked TRX for energy burns TRX at the protocol price of 100 sun per unit (the chain parameter getEnergyFee read 100 today). Luganodes’ fee guide puts the transfer at 64,285 energy to an existing holder and 130,285 to an address with no USDT, plus about 345 bandwidth if the daily free allowance is used up.
| USDT transfer | Network cost | In rupees (31 Oct, 2:45 PM IST) |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum, recipient holds USDT | 41,309 gas × 0.046 gwei | about ₹0.41 |
| Ethereum, new recipient | 63,209 gas × 0.046 gwei | about ₹0.62 |
| Ethereum, new recipient, if gas spikes to 2 gwei | 63,209 gas × 2 gwei | about ₹26.89 |
| Tron, recipient holds USDT | 6.43 TRX burned | about ₹195 |
| Tron, holder, free bandwidth used up | 6.77 TRX | about ₹205 |
| Tron, empty address | 13.03 TRX | about ₹395 |
Even if Ethereum gas jumped more than 40-fold to 2 gwei, a USDT send would still cost about ₹27, a seventh of the cheapest Tron burn. Our Ethereum gas fee in rupees tool shows today’s live figure before you send.
Why Tron still dominates anyway
Three things keep Tron popular, and they matter more than the table suggests.
- Exchange withdrawal fees are flat. When you withdraw from an exchange, you pay the exchange’s own fee for each network, not the live gas. Check the withdrawal screen; the cheapest network there may differ from the cheapest network on-chain.
- Tron users can cut the burn. Staking TRX or renting energy lowers the cost well below the burn figures above. Those figures are for a wallet that does neither.
- The recipient decides. USDT on Tron and USDT on Ethereum are different tokens on different chains. Sending ERC-20 USDT to an address that only expects TRC-20 can mean a lost or stuck transfer. Always confirm the network with the recipient first.
What it means for Indian investors
If you move USDT from your own self-custody wallet, Ethereum is now usually the cheaper network for a single transfer, and the gap is a few hundred rupees per send. If you’re paying someone, their network choice wins over the fee.
Tax doesn’t change with the network. A transfer between your own wallets isn’t a sale, which is why shifting to your own wallet owes no tax. Selling USDT for rupees is still taxed at 30% plus 4% cess on the gain, with 1% TDS on the sale value, as our guide to selling USDT in India explains. To see what a USDT amount is worth in rupees, use the USDT to INR converter, or check the live Tether price.
BtcMedia verdict: “Use Tron for USDT” was a 2021 rule. In late 2026 it’s a habit worth rechecking each time you send, because Ethereum gas has fallen so far that the fee ranking has flipped.
How we calculated this: Ethereum gas from eth_gasPrice on a public node, ETH ₹2,12,721, TRX ₹30.33 and USDT ₹94.84 from CoinGecko at about 2:45 PM IST on 31 October 2026; gas and energy units from the sources linked above. Fees change minute to minute.
FAQ
Is Ethereum always cheaper than Tron for USDT now? Not always. Ethereum gas can spike during busy markets, and Tron users with staked or rented energy pay far less than the burn price. Check both before a large or urgent send.
Do I pay tax on the network fee? No. A self-transfer isn’t a taxable event in India. The fee is just a cost of moving the coins.
What if I send USDT on the wrong network? Recovery depends on the receiving wallet or exchange and isn’t guaranteed. Confirm the network with the recipient before every send.
