A French bank that has applied to sell crypto lost money through crypto, and not in the way most headlines suggest. Nothing points to a hacked wallet or a broken blockchain. On the reported details, someone got money out of the bank and used ordinary exchange accounts to wash it. For Indian readers, the useful part is the clock. It shows how quickly a theft goes from something that can be frozen to something that can’t.
What is confirmed and what isn’t
Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, a cooperative banking group in western France, told CoinDesk on Wednesday that an attack “enabled fraudulent transactions” and is now under control. It said clients face no financial consequences, that it paused some transactions and that it told the authorities. It has not confirmed an amount, and it hasn’t said whether the stolen funds were euros or crypto.
The $133 million figure comes from on-chain investigator ZachXBT. He first flagged more than $106 million in suspicious exchange withdrawals on Monday and added another $27 million on Tuesday. Some of those withdrawals came after his public warning. He says the total may be higher once over-the-counter trades are counted. AFP also notes that the bank did not confirm the sum.
CoinDesk adds that L’Agefi reported in May that the bank had applied for a licence under the EU’s MiCA rules to offer crypto services.
The timeline, with our rupee conversion
We converted at about ₹94.6 per dollar (CoinGecko USDC/INR on 4 November, about 5 PM IST).
| When | What happened | Amount | In ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-2 Nov, 21 hours | USDC withdrawn from Kraken, Crypto.com and OKX accounts (Bitquery) | $108.8M | ≈ ₹1,029 crore |
| Within 4 hours | Stablecoins swapped into 27,553 ETH via UniswapX (Bitquery) | $63M | ≈ ₹596 crore |
| Mon 2 Nov | ZachXBT flags the withdrawals | $106M+ | ≈ ₹1,003 crore |
| Tue 3 Nov | Further withdrawals found, some after the warning | +$27M | ≈ ₹255 crore |
| Wed 4 Nov | ZachXBT names the bank; the bank confirms an attack | $133M+ | ≈ ₹1,258 crore |
The 27,553 ETH figure comes from Bitquery data cited by PANews. The same report says, citing people familiar with the matter, that the attackers moved fiat first and sent it through “money mule” accounts to exchanges. Treat that part as reported, not confirmed by the bank.
Who could freeze what
This is the part nobody else spelled out. Each hop changed who had the power to stop the money.
| Where the money sat | Who could stop it | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Bank account (euros) | The bank | It paused some transactions after detecting the attack |
| Exchange accounts | The exchange | Crypto.com says it blocked linked funds; Kraken restricted accounts (Cointelegraph) |
| USDC in a wallet | The issuer, which can freeze | Most was swapped out within hours |
| Ether, then Monero | No one centrally | CoinDesk notes no central issuer can freeze ether |
So the real window was the first few hours. Once nearly half the money became ether, recovery came down to catching it at the next exchange deposit.
What it means for Indian investors
India already has the rule that matters most here. Under CERT-In’s April 2022 directions, covered entities must report listed cyber incidents within 6 hours, and the list names attacks on virtual assets, exchanges and custodian wallets. Virtual asset exchanges must also keep KYC and transaction records for five years. Europe’s comparable bank rule under DORA asks for a first report within 4 hours, as Ledger Insights notes.
For scale, India reported ₹56,087 crore of cyber fraud over FY2024 to FY2026, as we covered in our 1930 helpline guide. That works out to about ₹51 crore a day, so this one theft equals roughly 25 days of it.
Three practical points follow:
- Use registered exchanges. An exchange on India’s FIU-IND list has KYC records investigators can trace. Check yours with our FIU-IND exchange checker.
- Never rent out your account. Mule accounts are where freezes land first. Our guide on frozen bank accounts after P2P trades shows how innocent people get caught in the same net.
- Know what stablecoins are worth in rupees. Our USDT to INR converter shows the live rate. Unlike ether, USDT and USDC can be frozen by their issuers.
BtcMedia verdict
This isn’t a crypto failure. It’s a bank breach that used crypto as the exit. Exchanges that acted quickly saved part of the money. The roughly $63 million that became ether within four hours shows why speed matters more than anything once funds leave a bank.
FAQ
Did Crédit Mutuel Arkéa customers lose money? The bank says the incident has no financial consequences for clients and that their interests are fully protected.
Was this a North Korean hack? ZachXBT told his Telegram channel he has high confidence it wasn’t Lazarus Group, based on how the funds moved, according to CoinDesk.
Could the same thing be traced in India? Indian exchanges must report such incidents to CERT-In within 6 hours and keep KYC records for five years. That makes funds landing at a registered Indian exchange far easier to trace and freeze.
How we calculated this: dollar amounts from Bitquery and ZachXBT as reported by CoinDesk, Cointelegraph and PANews; converted at about ₹94.6 per dollar (CoinGecko USDC/INR, 4 Nov 2026, about 5 PM IST); the daily fraud figure is ₹56,087 crore divided by 3 years and 365 days.
