Crypto tax on ₹1 crore profit

On a ₹1 crore profit from selling crypto, the tax is ₹34,32,000 if that is your only income, so you keep ₹65,68,000. Crypto is taxed at a flat 30% whatever your slab, plus 4% cess, plus a 10% surcharge at this level.

The maths

Only this profit+ ₹15,00,000 salary
VDA profit₹1,00,00,000₹1,00,00,000
Other income₹0₹15,00,000
30% tax on the profit₹30,00,000₹30,00,000
Surcharge10% = ₹3,00,00015% = ₹4,50,000
4% cess₹1,32,000₹1,38,000
Tax on the crypto profit₹34,32,000₹35,88,000

Surcharge bands (new regime) on total income: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore; the old regime adds 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief just above a band is not calculated here. Tax on your salary itself is separate and not shown.

Where the 1% TDS fits

TDS is charged on the sale value, not the profit. Say you bought for ₹1,00,00,000 and sold for ₹2,00,00,000: the exchange deducts ₹2,00,000. That is credit against your ₹34,32,000 bill, so you pay ₹32,32,000 more when filing. Had you sold at a loss, TDS would still have been deducted, and you would claim it back as a refund.

Same profit on listed shares

A ₹1 crore long-term gain on listed shares (held over 12 months) is taxed at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption: about ₹14,76,313 with cess and a surcharge capped at 15%, versus ₹34,32,000 on crypto. Crypto losses also cannot be set off against anything, while share losses can.

FAQ

How much tax do I pay on ₹1 crore crypto profit in India?

₹34,32,000 if the profit is your only income: 30% tax (₹30,00,000) plus 10% surcharge (₹3,00,000) plus 4% cess (₹1,32,000). You keep ₹65,68,000. Your income-tax slab does not matter.

Does surcharge apply on ₹1 crore crypto profit?

Yes. Total income above ₹50 lakh attracts surcharge; at ₹1 crore the rate is 10% of tax (marginal relief may reduce it just above a threshold).

Is the 1% TDS extra?

No. If you sold for ₹2,00,00,000 (twice your cost), ₹2,00,000 TDS was deducted and is credited against the ₹34,32,000 bill, leaving ₹32,32,000 to pay.
