Crypto tax on ₹50,000 profit

On a ₹50,000 profit from selling crypto, the tax is ₹15,600 if that is your only income, so you keep ₹34,400. Crypto is taxed at a flat 30% whatever your slab, plus 4% cess.

The maths

Only this profit+ ₹15,00,000 salary
VDA profit₹50,000₹50,000
Other income₹0₹15,00,000
30% tax on the profit₹15,000₹15,000
SurchargeNilNil
4% cess₹600₹600
Tax on the crypto profit₹15,600₹15,600

Surcharge bands (new regime) on total income: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore; the old regime adds 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief just above a band is not calculated here. Tax on your salary itself is separate and not shown.

Where the 1% TDS fits

TDS is charged on the sale value, not the profit. Say you bought for ₹50,000 and sold for ₹1,00,000: the exchange deducts ₹1,000. That is credit against your ₹15,600 bill, so you pay ₹14,600 more when filing. Had you sold at a loss, TDS would still have been deducted, and you would claim it back as a refund.

Same profit on listed shares

A ₹50,000 long-term gain on listed shares (held over 12 months) is taxed at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption: about ₹0 with cess, versus ₹15,600 on crypto. Crypto losses also cannot be set off against anything, while share losses can.

FAQ

How much tax do I pay on ₹50,000 crypto profit in India?

₹15,600 if the profit is your only income: 30% tax (₹15,000) plus 4% cess (₹600). You keep ₹34,400. Your income-tax slab does not matter.

Does surcharge apply on ₹50,000 crypto profit?

No. Surcharge only starts when total income exceeds ₹50 lakh.

Is the 1% TDS extra?

No. If you sold for ₹1,00,000 (twice your cost), ₹1,000 TDS was deducted and is credited against the ₹15,600 bill, leaving ₹14,600 to pay.
