Crypto tax on ₹5 lakh profit

On a ₹5 lakh profit from selling crypto, the tax is ₹1,56,000 if that is your only income, so you keep ₹3,44,000. Crypto is taxed at a flat 30% whatever your slab, plus 4% cess.

The maths

Only this profit+ ₹15,00,000 salary
VDA profit₹5,00,000₹5,00,000
Other income₹0₹15,00,000
30% tax on the profit₹1,50,000₹1,50,000
SurchargeNilNil
4% cess₹6,000₹6,000
Tax on the crypto profit₹1,56,000₹1,56,000

Surcharge bands (new regime) on total income: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore; the old regime adds 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief just above a band is not calculated here. Tax on your salary itself is separate and not shown.

Where the 1% TDS fits

TDS is charged on the sale value, not the profit. Say you bought for ₹5,00,000 and sold for ₹10,00,000: the exchange deducts ₹10,000. That is credit against your ₹1,56,000 bill, so you pay ₹1,46,000 more when filing. Had you sold at a loss, TDS would still have been deducted, and you would claim it back as a refund.

Same profit on listed shares

A ₹5 lakh long-term gain on listed shares (held over 12 months) is taxed at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption: about ₹48,750 with cess, versus ₹1,56,000 on crypto. Crypto losses also cannot be set off against anything, while share losses can.

₹1,56,000 if the profit is your only income: 30% tax (₹1,50,000) plus 4% cess (₹6,000). You keep ₹3,44,000. Your income-tax slab does not matter.
