Crypto tax on ₹1 lakh profit
On a ₹1 lakh profit from selling crypto, the tax is ₹31,200 if that is your only income, so you keep ₹68,800. Crypto is taxed at a flat 30% whatever your slab, plus 4% cess.
The maths
| Only this profit | + ₹15,00,000 salary | |
|---|---|---|
| VDA profit | ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,00,000 |
| Other income | ₹0 | ₹15,00,000 |
| 30% tax on the profit | ₹30,000 | ₹30,000 |
| Surcharge | Nil | Nil |
| 4% cess | ₹1,200 | ₹1,200 |
| Tax on the crypto profit | ₹31,200 | ₹31,200 |
Surcharge bands (new regime) on total income: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore; the old regime adds 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief just above a band is not calculated here. Tax on your salary itself is separate and not shown.
Where the 1% TDS fits
TDS is charged on the sale value, not the profit. Say you bought for ₹1,00,000 and sold for ₹2,00,000: the exchange deducts ₹2,000. That is credit against your ₹31,200 bill, so you pay ₹29,200 more when filing. Had you sold at a loss, TDS would still have been deducted, and you would claim it back as a refund.

Same profit on listed shares
A ₹1 lakh long-term gain on listed shares (held over 12 months) is taxed at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption: about ₹0 with cess, versus ₹31,200 on crypto. Crypto losses also cannot be set off against anything, while share losses can.
FAQ
How much tax do I pay on ₹1 lakh crypto profit in India?
₹31,200 if the profit is your only income: 30% tax (₹30,000) plus 4% cess (₹1,200). You keep ₹68,800. Your income-tax slab does not matter.
Does surcharge apply on ₹1 lakh crypto profit?
No. Surcharge only starts when total income exceeds ₹50 lakh.
Is the 1% TDS extra?
No. If you sold for ₹2,00,000 (twice your cost), ₹2,000 TDS was deducted and is credited against the ₹31,200 bill, leaving ₹29,200 to pay.
