Crypto tax on ₹50 lakh profit
On a ₹50 lakh profit from selling crypto, the tax is ₹15,60,000 if that is your only income, so you keep ₹34,40,000. Crypto is taxed at a flat 30% whatever your slab, plus 4% cess.
The maths
| Only this profit | + ₹15,00,000 salary | |
|---|---|---|
| VDA profit | ₹50,00,000 | ₹50,00,000 |
| Other income | ₹0 | ₹15,00,000 |
| 30% tax on the profit | ₹15,00,000 | ₹15,00,000 |
| Surcharge | Nil | 10% = ₹1,50,000 |
| 4% cess | ₹60,000 | ₹66,000 |
| Tax on the crypto profit | ₹15,60,000 | ₹17,16,000 |
Surcharge bands (new regime) on total income: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore; the old regime adds 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief just above a band is not calculated here. Tax on your salary itself is separate and not shown.
Where the 1% TDS fits
TDS is charged on the sale value, not the profit. Say you bought for ₹50,00,000 and sold for ₹1,00,00,000: the exchange deducts ₹1,00,000. That is credit against your ₹15,60,000 bill, so you pay ₹14,60,000 more when filing. Had you sold at a loss, TDS would still have been deducted, and you would claim it back as a refund.

Same profit on listed shares
A ₹50 lakh long-term gain on listed shares (held over 12 months) is taxed at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption: about ₹6,97,125 with cess and a surcharge capped at 15%, versus ₹15,60,000 on crypto. Crypto losses also cannot be set off against anything, while share losses can.
FAQ
How much tax do I pay on ₹50 lakh crypto profit in India?
₹15,60,000 if the profit is your only income: 30% tax (₹15,00,000) plus 4% cess (₹60,000). You keep ₹34,40,000. Your income-tax slab does not matter.
Does surcharge apply on ₹50 lakh crypto profit?
Not on its own, but with ₹15,00,000 of other income your total crosses ₹50 lakh, so 10% surcharge applies (marginal relief may reduce it).
Is the 1% TDS extra?
No. If you sold for ₹1,00,00,000 (twice your cost), ₹1,00,000 TDS was deducted and is credited against the ₹15,60,000 bill, leaving ₹14,60,000 to pay.
