Crypto tax on ₹25 lakh profit

On a ₹25 lakh profit from selling crypto, the tax is ₹7,80,000 if that is your only income, so you keep ₹17,20,000. Crypto is taxed at a flat 30% whatever your slab, plus 4% cess.

The maths

Only this profit+ ₹15,00,000 salary
VDA profit₹25,00,000₹25,00,000
Other income₹0₹15,00,000
30% tax on the profit₹7,50,000₹7,50,000
SurchargeNilNil
4% cess₹30,000₹30,000
Tax on the crypto profit₹7,80,000₹7,80,000

Surcharge bands (new regime) on total income: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore; the old regime adds 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief just above a band is not calculated here. Tax on your salary itself is separate and not shown.

Where the 1% TDS fits

TDS is charged on the sale value, not the profit. Say you bought for ₹25,00,000 and sold for ₹50,00,000: the exchange deducts ₹50,000. That is credit against your ₹7,80,000 bill, so you pay ₹7,30,000 more when filing. Had you sold at a loss, TDS would still have been deducted, and you would claim it back as a refund.

Same profit on listed shares

A ₹25 lakh long-term gain on listed shares (held over 12 months) is taxed at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption: about ₹3,08,750 with cess, versus ₹7,80,000 on crypto. Crypto losses also cannot be set off against anything, while share losses can.

₹7,80,000 if the profit is your only income: 30% tax (₹7,50,000) plus 4% cess (₹30,000). You keep ₹17,20,000. Your income-tax slab does not matter.
