Crypto tax on ₹25,000 profit
On a ₹25,000 profit from selling crypto, the tax is ₹7,800 if that is your only income, so you keep ₹17,200. Crypto is taxed at a flat 30% whatever your slab, plus 4% cess.
The maths
| Only this profit | + ₹15,00,000 salary | |
|---|---|---|
| VDA profit | ₹25,000 | ₹25,000 |
| Other income | ₹0 | ₹15,00,000 |
| 30% tax on the profit | ₹7,500 | ₹7,500 |
| Surcharge | Nil | Nil |
| 4% cess | ₹300 | ₹300 |
| Tax on the crypto profit | ₹7,800 | ₹7,800 |
Surcharge bands (new regime) on total income: 10% above ₹50 lakh, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore; the old regime adds 37% above ₹5 crore. Marginal relief just above a band is not calculated here. Tax on your salary itself is separate and not shown.
Where the 1% TDS fits
TDS is charged on the sale value, not the profit. Say you bought for ₹25,000 and sold for ₹50,000: the exchange deducts ₹500. That is credit against your ₹7,800 bill, so you pay ₹7,300 more when filing. Had you sold at a loss, TDS would still have been deducted, and you would claim it back as a refund. At ₹50,000 of sales, TDS applies only if your total crypto sales for the year cross ₹50,000 (if you are a "specified person", broadly an individual or HUF without business income above the audit limit) or ₹10,000 (everyone else).

Same profit on listed shares
A ₹25,000 long-term gain on listed shares (held over 12 months) is taxed at 12.5% above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption: about ₹0 with cess, versus ₹7,800 on crypto. Crypto losses also cannot be set off against anything, while share losses can.
FAQ
How much tax do I pay on ₹25,000 crypto profit in India?
₹7,800 if the profit is your only income: 30% tax (₹7,500) plus 4% cess (₹300). You keep ₹17,200. Your income-tax slab does not matter.
Does surcharge apply on ₹25,000 crypto profit?
No. Surcharge only starts when total income exceeds ₹50 lakh.
Is the 1% TDS extra?
No. And at this size it may not be deducted at all: if you sold for ₹50,000 (twice your cost) and that was your only crypto sale in the year, a "specified person" (most salaried individuals) is below the ₹50,000 yearly TDS threshold. Above it, or for others above ₹10,000, 1% (₹500) is deducted and credited against your ₹7,800 bill.
