Bitcoin is back at a line that has mattered all year: the average price the US spot Bitcoin ETFs paid for the coins they hold. Glassnode’s latest weekly report puts that cost basis just above $80,000, and The Defiant reports Bitcoin fell 3.7% to test it near $81,500.

Most coverage stops at the dollar number. Indian holders pay in rupees, so we converted every cost line Glassnode tracks, and measured how far each one sits from the ETF line.

Why the ETF cost basis matters

A cost basis is simply an average purchase price. When the market trades near it, the average ETF holder is roughly break-even. Glassnode notes that this same line capped Bitcoin in the spring: price stalled just under it in early May and didn’t close an hour above it until 3 September. In October it has flipped to support.

The deepest test came on 15 October, when the hourly close fell to about $80,100 and the next hour was back above the line. The large block of buy orders at $80,000 on Binance’s spot book was mostly used up in that sweep, then refilled by 20 October, though smaller than at its peak, according to Glassnode.

The cost lines, in dollars and rupees

All dollar levels are Glassnode estimates from its 21 October report. Rupee figures are our conversion at the 22 October close of 94.82 per dollar reported by Reuters, and exclude any premium on Indian exchanges.

Holder group / levelUSD (Glassnode)INR per BTC (at 94.82)Distance from $81,500
Coins bought 1-2 years ago~$100,000~₹94.8 lakh+22.7%
Coins bought 6-12 months ago~$86,700~₹82.2 lakh+6.4%
US spot ETF cost basis~$81,000-81,500~₹76.8-77.3 lakh0%
Corporate treasury average~$80,200~₹76.0 lakh-1.6%
True Market Mean (active investors)~$77,600~₹73.6 lakh-4.8%

The table shows how crowded the zone is. Two of the largest holder groups, ETFs and treasury companies, have average costs within about 1.6% of each other. Glassnode says a daily close below $80,000 would put both at a loss on average.

What sits above price

The ceiling is just as close. Glassnode places the 6-12 month buyers’ cost near $86,700, down from $88,000 a week earlier, inside a band of sell orders between $86,500 and $87,500. The two largest liquidation clusters sit near $85,000 and $87,000, which means a move up could speed up as short positions are forced closed, then run into those sell orders.

Glassnode also says profit-taking has slowed to about half its pace at the September high, and the ETFs took in $653 million on 19 October on thin volume.

The calendar

Glassnode flags two dates: the US Federal Reserve decision on 28 October, and MSCI’s list of index removals on 11 November, which it says could include Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder.

What it means for Indian investors

In rupee terms, the key support band runs from about ₹73.6 lakh to ₹77.3 lakh per Bitcoin, and the first resistance is around ₹82.2 lakh. These are converted figures; the price you see on an Indian exchange can differ because of the local premium and the day’s exchange rate. You can check the live rupee price on our Bitcoin INR page and Bitcoin price today in INR.

The rupee itself is part of the story. It fell 0.4% on 22 October as Brent crude climbed, which nudges the INR price of Bitcoin up even when the dollar price is flat. If you’re accumulating in small amounts, our Bitcoin SIP calculator shows how averaging plays out, and the rest of our tools handle sats-to-rupee and tax maths.

Tax doesn’t care about support lines. Gains are taxed at a flat 30% plus cess, 1% TDS applies on transfers, and losses can’t be offset against other income or carried forward.

BtcMedia verdict

The ETF cost basis is a useful map, not a floor. It held on 15 October, but Glassnode itself puts the next major support about 5% lower, at the True Market Mean. With heavy resistance only 6% above, Bitcoin is boxed in a narrow range until something, possibly the Fed, breaks it. For details on the coin, see our Bitcoin price page.

What is that in rupees? At the 22 October close of 94.82 per dollar, roughly ₹76.8-77.3 lakh per Bitcoin, before any Indian exchange premium.

What happens if Bitcoin closes below it? Glassnode says a close below the line would put mid-$70,000 levels back in play, with the True Market Mean near $77,600 as the next major support.
